Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former Mayor of Atlanta, has made history as the first Black woman elected governor of a US state following her victory in Georgia's gubernatorial election.
Media projections by CNN and NBC News on Tuesday declared Bottoms the winner after defeating Republican candidate and billionaire healthcare executive, Rick Jackson.
Her victory ends more than two decades of Republican control of Georgia's governorship, with outgoing Governor Brian Kemp unable to seek re-election after reaching his constitutional term limit.
The result also represents a political setback for President Donald Trump, who endorsed Jackson in July and campaigned alongside him in the Atlanta area during the final weeks of the election. Former President Barack Obama, on the other hand, rallied support for Bottoms in Georgia in late October.
In another significant development, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff secured re-election after defeating Republican Congressman Mike Collins, further reinforcing Georgia's position as a crucial battleground state in American politics.
Bottoms served as Mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022 before joining former President Joe Biden's administration as Director of the Office of Public Engagement. She later served as a senior adviser to Biden's 2024 re-election campaign.
During her gubernatorial campaign, Bottoms pledged to expand Medicaid coverage, reduce the cost of living for families and protect voting rights.
Her Republican challenger, Jackson, entered the race in February, presenting himself as a political outsider whose childhood experience in Georgia's foster care system shaped his political journey.
Jackson reportedly spent more than $100 million of his personal fortune on the campaign. He secured the Republican nomination after defeating Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, who had initially enjoyed Trump's endorsement, in a June primary runoff.
Bottoms' victory marks a historic breakthrough for Black women in American politics and signals a significant shift in Georgia's political landscape.
