Residents of five communities in Kona Ward, Jalingo Local Government Area of Taraba State, have called on government at all levels to urgently address their infrastructural challenges, warning that continued neglect could influence their voting decisions in the 2027 general elections.
The affected communities — Kpantiwuta, Murkuni, Yandi, Sonpono and Ndaiyaro — made the appeal following a collective effort by residents, including elders, women and youths, to undertake the manual construction and rehabilitation of local roads to restore access to their communities.
The residents said the deplorable condition of their roads had continued to restrict movement, disrupt economic activities and make access to farmlands and markets increasingly difficult, thereby threatening the livelihoods of farming households.
They appealed to government functionaries, elected representatives, political office holders and candidates seeking various positions in 2027 to prioritise the construction of durable roads, bridges and provision of essential social amenities in the affected communities.
The community leadership maintained that residents should not be left to shoulder the responsibility of providing basic infrastructure through communal efforts when such responsibilities fall within the mandate of government.
It further stressed that democratic participation must be accompanied by responsive governance, insisting that communities that contribute to the electoral process deserve to enjoy the dividends of democracy through improved infrastructure and essential public services.
Consequently, the residents warned that failure by political leaders and relevant authorities to address their concerns could compel them to reconsider their political support and withhold their votes in the 2027 general elections.
They called for immediate intervention, urging the Taraba State Government, Jalingo Local Government Council and other relevant stakeholders to demonstrate commitment to grassroots development by addressing the infrastructural challenges before the next electoral cycle.
The residents said their communal road construction initiative was a demonstration of self-help and determination, but maintained that sustainable development requires deliberate government intervention rather than leaving rural communities to provide essential infrastructure on their own.
