Calls on Kefas, Police, DSS to Investigate Alleged Threats Against Local Government Employees
The Danjuma Usman Shiddi (Danji SS) Campaign Council has accused the Chairman of Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State, Hon. Emmanuel Ubandoma, of allegedly threatening local government workers with job losses over their political affiliations and choices.
The council made the allegation in a press statement issued on Sunday, October 18, 2026, following the circulation of a video on social media in which Ubandoma allegedly warned local government employees that their jobs could be at risk if they failed to support his preferred political camp.
Describing the alleged remarks as undemocratic and unacceptable, the campaign council said any attempt to use public office to compel political allegiance would undermine democratic principles and the freedom of public servants to make lawful political choices.
The statement, signed by the council's spokesperson, Mr. Emmanuel Umaru, stressed that local government workers are public servants whose employment should be regulated by established laws and civil service rules rather than personal political interests.
It maintained that while public servants are subject to applicable regulations governing partisan political activities, such rules should not be used to punish employees for their political opinions or compel them to support a particular political group.
Citing Sections 39, 40 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, as amended, the council highlighted the constitutional protections relating to freedom of expression, association and protection against discrimination on specified grounds. It also referenced Section 14(2)(c), which provides for the participation of the people in their government in accordance with the Constitution.
The campaign council argued that political support should be earned through credible programmes, performance and engagement with the electorate rather than through threats or fear of losing one's livelihood.
It noted that Taraba State continues to face challenges relating to infrastructure, unemployment, insecurity, healthcare, education and economic hardship, urging public officeholders to concentrate on addressing these concerns instead of engaging in alleged political intimidation.
The council further stated that its principal, Danjuma Usman Shiddi, remained committed to peaceful political engagement, accountability, respect for fundamental rights and the protection of democratic freedoms across the state.
As part of its demands, the Danji SS Campaign Council called on Governor Agbu Kefas to examine the allegations against the Ibi council chairman and take appropriate action if wrongdoing is established.
It also urged the Commissioner of Police in Taraba State and the Department of State Services (DSS) to assess the circulating video, establish the facts and take any necessary lawful steps to prevent intimidation, harassment or threats to public peace in Ibi Local Government Area.
The council called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Taraba State Council, and relevant public service authorities to protect the rights of local government employees and ensure that no worker is unfairly victimised for exercising lawful political freedoms.
It equally urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant democratic institutions to take note of the allegations and address any conduct falling within their respective statutory responsibilities that could undermine free political participation.
Addressing local government employees in Ibi, the council urged them to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, advising anyone who experiences threats, harassment or victimisation to document such incidents and report them through appropriate legal and administrative channels.
It cautioned workers against resorting to violence or unlawful conduct in response to any alleged intimidation.
The statement reiterated the council's position that political authority is temporary and must be exercised within the framework of the Constitution and the rule of law.
It called for a political environment in which competing parties and candidates present their ideas freely and citizens are allowed to make their political choices without fear of harassment or loss of employment.
