…WOFCTTRA, FCT Women Affairs Secretariat Celebrate Rural Women
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged rural women to embrace agriculture and other income-generating ventures as pathways to wealth creation, financial independence and improved livelihoods.
She made the call during the 2026 International Rural Women’s Day celebration organised by the Wives of FCT Traditional Rulers Association (WOFCTTRA) in collaboration with the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat.
Represented by Hailmary Aipoh, the First Lady acknowledged the invaluable contributions of rural women to food production, family welfare and community development, describing them as critical partners in Nigeria’s agricultural advancement and economic growth.
She encouraged the women to take advantage of available agricultural initiatives, empowerment programmes and business opportunities to improve their economic status, strengthen household incomes and contribute more effectively to national development.
Tinubu stressed the need to provide rural women with adequate resources, modern farming tools and other essential support to enable them to maximise their potential and improve their standard of living.
The celebration brought together women from the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory to recognise their resilience, celebrate their contributions to society and explore practical strategies for improving their economic well-being.
Speaking at the event, the President of WOFCTTRA and wife of the Ona of Abaji, Hauwa Adamu Yunusa, said the celebration offered an opportunity to recognise the sacrifices of rural women and renew calls for greater support for their economic empowerment.
Yunusa emphasised the importance of equipping women with relevant skills, financial resources and business opportunities to expand their enterprises, increase household earnings and contribute meaningfully to the development of their communities.
Stakeholders at the gathering also called for improved access to credit facilities, agricultural inputs, modern farming equipment and sustainable business opportunities to enable rural women to overcome economic challenges and participate more actively in productive activities.
They further advocated stronger collaboration among government agencies, traditional institutions and development partners to address barriers limiting rural women's access to economic opportunities.
The celebration climaxed with the presentation of grinding machines and cash assistance to selected women to support small-scale businesses, promote entrepreneurship and improve household incomes.
The beneficiaries expressed renewed hope that the intervention would help them strengthen their businesses, build sustainable livelihoods and achieve greater financial independence.
The organisers noted that sustained investment in rural women would go beyond improving individual livelihoods, stressing that empowering women could help strengthen food security, reduce poverty and accelerate socioeconomic development across the Federal Capital Territory.
