The Taraba State Commissioner for Secondary, Technical and Vocational Education, Dr Augustina Godwin, has commended Governor Agbu Kefas for strengthening the implementation of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project in the state.
Dr Augustina gave the commendation on Thursday during the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC) celebration organised by AGILE Taraba State at Government Day Secondary School, Nyamusala, Jalingo.
The event, held under the theme, “Empowering Adolescent Girls through Education, Life Skills and Safe Spaces to End Child Marriage in Nigeria,” focused on promoting girls’ education, preventing child marriage and gender-based violence, and equipping adolescent girls with essential life skills.
The commissioner applauded Governor Kefas for supporting Taraba State’s participation in the AGILE Project, noting that the initiative provides opportunities to improve girls’ access to education, create safer learning environments and equip them with the skills needed to overcome social and educational challenges.
She also acknowledged the contributions of stakeholders who facilitated the state’s inclusion in the programme and commended the State Project Coordinator, Mr Godlove Jacob Yumbak, and his team for their dedication and commitment to the successful implementation of AGILE activities.
Dr Augustina stressed the need for sustained collaboration among government institutions, school authorities, parents, communities and development partners to ensure that adolescent girls enrol in school, remain in education and complete their studies.
She urged stakeholders to create an enabling environment where girls could access quality education, build confidence, discover their potential and contribute meaningfully to societal development.
Highlights of the celebration included a student debate on girls’ education and the dangers of early marriage, as well as exhibitions showcasing AGILE intervention areas, including safe spaces, gender-based violence prevention and life skills development.
The exhibitions educated participants on the importance of protecting girls against abuse, discrimination and harmful practices, while highlighting support systems and safe environments where adolescent girls could seek guidance and protection.
The event attracted religious and traditional leaders, representatives of various ministries, departments and agencies, teachers, students from ten selected secondary schools and other education stakeholders.
The commemoration reaffirmed the commitment of AGILE Taraba State and its partners to expanding educational opportunities for adolescent girls, strengthening child protection and addressing barriers that prevent girls from achieving their full potential.
