HEALTH: NANNM Demands Urgent Security Measures, Hostel Commissioning After Attacks on Nursing Students

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Taraba State Council, has called on the Taraba State Government to urgently strengthen security around the Taraba State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Jalingo, following reported armed robbery and other attacks on students.

The NANNM Chairman in the state, Comrade Nathaniel Pius Merigi, made the call when he led officials of the association on a courtesy visit to the Taraba State Ministry of Tertiary Education to register the union's concerns over the security situation affecting nursing students.

The visit followed a recent peaceful protest by students of the college, who demanded the immediate commissioning of the institution's hostel and improved security for students living in the Yaggai community.

Merigi said the association decided to intervene after visiting some of the affected students and the locations where the attacks reportedly occurred.

He explained that NANNM officials had visited the hostels where students were allegedly robbed in Yaggai, as well as victims receiving treatment in hospital, adding that the situation required urgent intervention by the government and relevant authorities.

The NANNM chairman appealed to the government to consider transferring the student who was reportedly a victim of sexual assault to another College of Nursing to protect her privacy and minimise possible stigmatisation.

He also called for the deployment of adequate security personnel to the area and urged the government to provide replacement mobile phones to students who lost their devices during the attacks, to cushion the impact of the incident on their academic activities.

Merigi further advocated the establishment of a security checkpoint within the Yaggai area to enhance surveillance and protect both students and other residents of the community.

Responding on behalf of the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr Mike Doi Jen, the Permanent Secretary/Secretary of the Ministry, Comrade Solomon D. Nathaniel, said the ministry was concerned about the development.

He said that upon receiving information about the attacks, members of the college management had visited the affected hostels to assess the situation and ascertain the extent of the damage.

The ministry official assured the NANNM leadership that the association's concerns and recommendations would be communicated to the appropriate authorities for prompt action.

He also solicited the support and cooperation of NANNM and other stakeholders for the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas in its efforts to provide a conducive and secure learning environment for students across the state.

INSECURITY:Bissaula Community Leader Raises Alarm Over Renewed Attack, Calls for Lasting Security Deployment.

A community leader in Bissaula Ward of Kurmi Local Government Area, Taraba State, Alhaji Idi Ismaila, has decried a fresh wave of violence that disrupted the fragile peace recently restored to the area. INSECURITY: Two suspected kidnappers nabbed in Mayo Dassa, Jalingo.

Troops of six Brigade Nigerian Army headquarters ,Jalingo have dismantled a notorious kidnapping syndicate terrorizing parts of Jalingo and Lau Local Government Areas of Taraba State.
