CRIME: 18 Phones Stolen, Student Injured as Security Scare Hits Taraba Nursing College Jalingo.

 Security concerns have been raised at the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences, Jalingo, following an alleged theft incident at the institution’s boys’ hostel in which about 18 mobile phones were reportedly stolen and a student sustained injuries.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of students, particularly those residing in hostel facilities and private accommodation around Yaggai Community  in Jalingo.

Reacting to the development, the College’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Gideon David Jimenda, said the management responded swiftly to the incident, led by the Provost, Dr Dorcas Dugule, alongside the Registrar and Chief Security Officer.

According to him, the injured student was immediately taken to the hospital, where he received appropriate medication funded by the college management. He said the student has since returned from the hospital and is responding to treatment.

Mr Gideon also disclosed that some items allegedly connected to the incident were confiscated by one of the college’s security personnel, while the Chief Security Officer was at the Kpantinapu Police Outpost in connection with the matter.

He assured that the college management was working with relevant security agencies to strengthen security at the hostels.

“The management is working with relevant security agencies to ensure adequate security at the hostels,” he said, adding that the college was also expecting the commissioning of its new hostels.

According to him, “We are soon expecting the commissioning of our hostels where students shall relocate into the college premises.”

The development has also drawn attention to the accommodation challenges confronting students, as many are reportedly living off campus because the main college hostel is yet to be commissioned by the Taraba State Government. Some students have consequently resorted to renting private hostels where security arrangements may vary.

The situation has prompted calls for urgent measures to strengthen security around student residences, including increased patrols by security agencies and temporary security arrangements by the college management.

Stakeholders have also called for the completion and commissioning of the college hostel, stressing that students training as nurses and midwives require a safe and secure environment conducive to learning.

The incident is expected to further heighten discussions on student welfare and security as the college management and relevant security agencies work to prevent a recurrence.
