The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Taraba State Chapter, Hon. Moses Maihankali, has commended Governor Agbu Kefas for what he described as significant development strides recorded in the state as Taraba marks its 35th anniversary.
Maihankali, who is also the Chairman of Kurmi Local Government Council, spoke on behalf of the 16 local government council chairmen in the state in a congratulatory message to Governor Kefas and the people of Taraba.
He said the anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the state’s journey of development while acknowledging the contributions of successive administrations and citizens to its growth.
The ALGON chairman listed free education, security, agriculture, healthcare, human capital development, employment, workers’ welfare, infrastructure, economic development, and youth and women empowerment among areas where he said the present administration had recorded notable progress.
Maihankali particularly described the Governor’s free education policy as an investment in the future of Taraba children and a measure capable of reducing the financial burden of education on families across the state.
He also commended the administration’s efforts in strengthening security, developing agriculture and creating opportunities for youths and women to become economically productive.
The ALGON chairman further praised Governor Kefas for his support to local governments, saying the empowerment of councils had enhanced their ability to take development closer to the people.
According to him, effective grassroots development remains critical to achieving inclusive growth, as local councils are best positioned to identify and respond to the immediate needs of communities.
Maihankali urged Tarabans to continue supporting the state government, while also calling for greater unity, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship.
He stressed that the responsibility of building a prosperous Taraba could not be left to government alone, urging citizens to contribute their quota to the development of the state.
«“As we celebrate 35 years of our dear state, we must recognise that the task of building a greater Taraba belongs to all of us. Government alone cannot do it. Our collective efforts, cooperation and commitment to peace and development will produce even greater results,” he said.»
The ALGON chairman also charged youths in the state to embrace discipline, education, entrepreneurship and other positive values, describing them as critical stakeholders in determining Taraba’s future.
He urged young people to shun crime, violence and drug abuse, while taking advantage of opportunities provided by government and other stakeholders to improve their livelihoods.
Maihankali also acknowledged the contributions of past leaders of Taraba State, stressing that the progress recorded over the past 35 years was the product of the efforts and sacrifices of successive administrations and citizens.
He congratulated Governor Kefas, traditional rulers, political leaders, workers, youths, women and all Tarabans at home and in the diaspora on the anniversary.
He expressed optimism that with unity, peace, purposeful leadership and collective responsibility, Taraba would achieve greater development, while reaffirming the commitment of local government councils to programmes aimed at improving the wellbeing of citizens at the grassroots.
