The Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Taraba State Chapter, has called on government institutions, communities, organisations and individuals to intensify support, inclusion and care for people living with spinal cord injuries as the world marks Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month.
The association made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Taraba State Chairperson, Hon. Mary James Gaisa, to mark the beginning of September.
Gaisa said the awareness month provides an opportunity to draw attention to the challenges confronting people living with spinal cord injuries and promote a society where they are treated with dignity, respect and compassion.
According to her, spinal cord injury can affect anyone, while its consequences often extend beyond the affected individual to families and communities.
She identified accessibility, mobility, healthcare, employment, education, social participation and inclusion among the major challenges faced by people living with spinal cord injuries.
The SCIAN chairperson urged members of the public to make the month more than a symbolic awareness campaign by taking practical steps to support affected persons.
She encouraged individuals to visit or reach out to people living with spinal cord injuries, offer words of encouragement, assist with accessibility needs and support rehabilitation programmes and access to assistive devices.
Gaisa also called for increased public education on spinal cord injury prevention, while urging society to reject discrimination and stigma against people living with disabilities.
“Let’s put a smile on the face of someone living with spinal cord injury,” she urged, stressing that simple acts of kindness, inclusion and companionship could make a significant difference in the lives of affected persons.
She further called on government and relevant institutions to promote policies and environments that guarantee accessibility and equal opportunities for people living with spinal cord injuries.
“People living with spinal cord injury should never feel forgotten,” Gaisa said, adding that the awareness month should serve as a reminder that “every person matters, every life has value, and every person deserves dignity, love, opportunity and inclusion.”
The SCIAN Taraba Chapter therefore urged residents to turn awareness into concrete action throughout September and beyond, with the message: “From Awareness to Action — Together, Let’s Make a Difference.”
