The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Taraba State Chapter, Hon. Moses Maihankali, has called on Nigerians to embrace unity, patriotism and active participation in the democratic process as the country marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In a statement issued on Friday, the ALGON Chairman described June 12 as a historic milestone that symbolizes Nigeria's collective struggle for freedom, justice and democratic governance.
Hon. Maihankali said the sacrifices made by the nation's democratic heroes and heroines should continue to inspire leaders at all levels to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance.
According to him, local governments occupy a strategic position in the country's democratic structure because of their closeness to the people and their role in delivering essential services and grassroots development.
He noted that ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening local government administration across the country would further deepen democracy and improve the welfare of citizens, particularly those living in rural communities.
The ALGON Chairman also urged elected public officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups and other critical stakeholders to promote peace, unity and mutual understanding, stressing that sustainable development can only be achieved in a stable and secure environment.
He further called on Nigerians to uphold the values of patriotism, tolerance and civic responsibility, maintaining that democracy thrives when citizens actively contribute to nation-building.
"As we commemorate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to building a stronger, more united and prosperous Nigeria. The future of our nation depends on our collective resolve to protect democratic institutions and ensure that governance continues to serve the interest of the people," he said.
Hon. Maihankali reaffirmed ALGON's commitment to supporting policies and programmes that would strengthen local government administration and improve the living standards of citizens across Taraba State and the country at large.
The ALGON Chairman extended his goodwill message to Nigerians, expressing optimism that the nation's democratic journey would continue to foster peace, development and inclusive governance.
