Fresh controversy has erupted over the conduct of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the Gassol II State Constituency in Taraba State, following allegations that the exercise did not take place as scheduled.
One of the aspirants in the contest, Hon. Japheth Ezekiel Dadason, alleged that the primary election was compromised by some party officials and influential stakeholders, insisting that no valid electoral process was conducted in the constituency.
Speaking in a telephone interview with reporters, Dadason claimed that his opponent Hon. Yusuf Ibrahim Naawai, alongside some state party officials, allegedly whisked away the returning officer to a hotel in Mutum Biyu before the commencement of the exercise.
According to him, the returning officer was reportedly taken to Best Loner Two Hotel, where result sheets were allegedly filled without the participation of delegates and party members expected at the primary venue.
The aspirant further alleged that security personnel attached to the exercise provided cover for those involved, a development he described as a direct attack on internal democracy within the party.
Dadason expressed disappointment over what he termed an attempt to disenfranchise him and his supporters from participating in a transparent and credible primary election.
He called on the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party to urgently intervene in the matter to safeguard the integrity of the party’s democratic processes and ensure justice for all aspirants.
“I will continue to pursue my mandate legitimately. Any result that may be announced as the outcome of the PDP primaries in Gassol II should be regarded as fake and void because no election was conducted,” he stated.
The aggrieved aspirant, however, appealed to his supporters to remain calm and law-abiding while the matter is being addressed through appropriate party channels.
The development is expected to heighten political tension within the constituency as party stakeholders await an official response from the state leadership of the PDP regarding the allegations surrounding the exercise.
