Residents of Balgadam Community in Mutum Daya, Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State have embarked on a self-help project to address a long-standing water crisis affecting the area.
The community members, citing years of neglect and lack of basic amenities, have pooled personal resources to commence the drilling of a borehole aimed at providing potable water for daily use.
A cross-section of residents who spoke to our correspondent described the situation as dire, noting that access to clean water has remained a major challenge. According to them, villagers, including women and children, are often compelled to trek long distances to neighbouring areas such as Mutum Daya Central Primary School and Unguwan Rogo in search of water.
They lamented that despite their consistent participation in electoral processes over the years, the community has yet to benefit from government-provided water infrastructure.
“We have waited for too long. Every election season, we come out to vote with hope, but nothing changes. Now, we have decided to help ourselves,” one resident said.
This was contained in a post made by Paul Peniel on his verified Facebook handle, appreciating the community efforts.
The development, they noted, reflects growing frustration among rural dwellers who feel sidelined in the distribution of basic social amenities.
While expressing dissatisfaction, the community maintained a conciliatory tone, calling on political office holders and well-meaning individuals from Karim II Constituency to support the ongoing project.
They stressed that their demand is modest and fundamental, emphasizing that access to clean water should not be considered a luxury in this day and age.
Community leaders further hinted that going forward, constituents may demand greater accountability from political aspirants, insisting that future engagements would be based on tangible commitments to community development.
Despite the challenges, residents expressed optimism that with collective effort and external support, the borehole project would be completed, bringing much-needed relief to the community.
