A 200-level student of the Department of English Language and Linguistics at Taraba State University, Miss Monica Tanko, has dismissed as false a report alleging her involvement in a fracas with security personnel at the institution’s Preliminary Campus Hostel.
The report, published by Taraba Daily Graph on March 20, 2026, claimed that the student engaged in a confrontation with security officials. However, Miss Tanko, in a disclaimer issued the same day, described the account as inaccurate and misleading.
She clarified that the incident in question was a routine disciplinary engagement relating to a dress code concern, which she said she promptly resolved by complying with the institution’s regulations. According to her, after tendering an apology and addressing the issue, she was granted access to the hostel facility located within the Taraba State Polytechnic.
Miss Tanko further stated that she neither granted any interview to the publication nor authorized any media platform to speak on her behalf regarding the matter. She stressed that the report was published without her knowledge, consent, or verification of facts from her.
Dismissing any purported social media narratives linked to the incident, she noted that she does not operate a Facebook account or any online platform where such claims may have originated.
The student expressed concern over what she described as unprofessional conduct in the handling of the story, particularly the failure to obtain her perspective prior to publication. She called on media organisations to uphold the principles of responsible journalism, including accuracy, fairness, and the right of reply.
While reaffirming her respect for institutional authority, Miss Tanko commended the management of Taraba State University for maintaining discipline and promoting moral and academic standards among students.
She distanced herself entirely from the publication and urged the management of Taraba Daily Graph to exercise due diligence and professionalism in future reportage.
