The recent signing of the bill establishing the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) by Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has been hailed as a historic victory for persons with disabilities across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the disability community, Muhammad Sani Bello, Vice Principal of the Special Education Center, expressed profound gratitude to the governor for what he described as a “new dawn” for people with special needs. He emphasized that the establishment of the DRC marks a significant step towards inclusivity, equality, and social justice in Taraba State.
"The commission will play a vital role in promoting the rights, dignity, and well-being of persons with disabilities," Bello said. "It will open doors to opportunities, improve welfare, and raise the standard of living for our members."
He commended Governor Kefas for his visionary leadership and commitment to the inclusion of all citizens, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges. Bello also extended special appreciation to Hon. Dr. Filister Musa, Commissioner of Social Justice and Integration, for her tireless advocacy and instrumental role in pushing the bill to success.
The disability community is optimistic that the newly established commission will be effectively implemented and staffed with competent, passionate individuals who will champion the cause of inclusion and equity.
“May Governor Kefas and Dr. Filister Musa continue to receive guidance as they work towards building a more inclusive Taraba,” Bello concluded.
The Disability Rights Commission is expected to begin operations in the coming months, focusing on policy implementation, access to services, and legal protections for persons living with disabilities.
