Nigerian Army Headquarters Sensitizes 6 Brigade Troops on Human Rights and Professional Conduct

By Jako, July 24, 2025

In a renewed push to promote professionalism and uphold human rights within the Nigerian Army, the Army Headquarters (AHQ), through its Department of Civil-Military Affairs (DCMA), has organized a sensitization workshop for troops of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS). The one-day event took place on July 23, 2025, in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.

Declaring the workshop open, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General GU Chibuisi, emphasized the importance of discipline and adherence to legal and ethical standards, especially in the face of evolving security challenges. He noted that modern military operations place a heavy responsibility on troops to operate within the boundaries of the law while respecting the dignity and rights of civilians.

“Respect for human rights must remain a cornerstone of our operations,” General Chibuisi stated. “This workshop is not only about operational efficiency but also about producing soldiers who are law-abiding and accountable members of society.”

In his welcome address, Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, underlined the relevance of the training in reinforcing the Brigade’s commitment to ethical standards and the protection of fundamental human rights. He recalled the Brigade’s professionalism during nationwide protests, where troops exercised restraint and recorded no casualties.

“This training is both a refresher and a solemn reminder of our oath to protect lives and property,” General Uwa said. “We are grateful to the DCMA for bringing this initiative to 6 Brigade and to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, for his unwavering dedication to the development and welfare of our troops.”

The workshop featured expert-led sessions on key issues including Human Rights and Professional Conduct, Psychoactive Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and Family Cohesion. Troops also participated in interactive engagements and received educational souvenirs.

The sensitization program is part of the Nigerian Army’s broader efforts to instill professionalism and enhance civil-military relations in its operations across the country.

And if urgent steps are not taken, the consequences could be dire. A Pattern Too Familiar From Plateau to Benue, from Southern Kaduna to Zamfara, Nigeria’s troubled history is littered with stories of migration that started innocently but later spiraled into violent conflicts. Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
