TARABA: Taraba Launches Climate Change Policy, Action Plan to Strengthen Environmental Resilience

By Jako Keke, August 23, 2026.

The Taraba State Government has launched its Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, signalling a renewed commitment to strengthening climate governance, protecting the environment and building resilience to the growing impacts of climate change across the state.

The policy was unveiled at the C2C Event Centre in Jalingo at an event attended by government officials, environmental experts, civil society organisations, youth leaders and other stakeholders.

In her opening remarks, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Hajiya Aishat A. Barde, said the policy provides a strategic framework for strengthening climate governance, protecting ecosystems, enhancing resilience and creating opportunities for sustainable development in Taraba State.

Barde explained that the policy was developed through extensive stakeholder consultations, technical assessments and collaboration among relevant ministries, experts and civil society organisations.

She expressed optimism that its effective implementation would provide a coordinated response to climate-related challenges while advancing environmental protection, climate resilience and sustainable development across the state.

Governor Agbu Kefas, while speaking at the event, said climate change was no longer an issue confined to international conferences, stressing that its effects were already being experienced by communities across Taraba.

The governor identified changing rainfall patterns as one of the major climate-related challenges affecting farmers, noting that early or delayed rains were contributing to crop failures and the destruction of farmlands.

He said the newly launched policy was designed to respond to these practical challenges rather than remain a theoretical document.

Governor Kefas further directed that environmental and climate considerations be integrated into government planning and decision-making processes across the state.

He stressed that tackling climate change required a collective effort, noting that responsibility for implementing the policy should not rest solely with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

According to him, critical sectors, including Agriculture, Water Resources and Energy, have important roles to play in ensuring the successful implementation of the climate action plan.

The governor therefore called for sustained collaboration among government institutions, development partners, communities, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to translate the policy into concrete actions capable of protecting Taraba's environment and strengthening the resilience of its people.
