The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Lau State Constituency, Hon. Silas Kessavo Rifore, has urged youths in Taraba State to embrace patriotism, responsible citizenship and active participation in democratic processes as pathways to building a better Nigeria.
Kessavo made the call while speaking on the significance of the 2026 International Youth Day, urging young people to see themselves as critical stakeholders in the political and socioeconomic development of the country.
According to him, patriotism would inspire youths to develop a positive vision for their communities and contribute meaningfully to the pursuit of a prosperous and united Nigeria.
He said the theme of this year's International Youth Day, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” was timely, stressing that despite differences in background, location and circumstances, young people share common aspirations for good governance, peace, economic opportunity and a better future.
The PDP candidate said International Youth Day should serve not only as an occasion to celebrate young people but also as a platform for reminding them of their responsibilities to society and the role they must play in nation building.
He congratulated youths across Taraba State, particularly those in Lau Local Government Area, and urged them to channel their energy towards productive ventures that would improve their livelihoods and contribute to community development.
While outlining aspects of his proposed agenda if given the mandate to represent Lau State Constituency in the Taraba State House of Assembly, Kessavo placed emphasis on skills acquisition and youth empowerment.
He maintained that equipping young people with relevant vocational and entrepreneurial skills would make them economically productive, self-reliant and better positioned to contribute to the development of the constituency.
He stressed that skills acquisition should be accompanied by access to opportunities and supportive policies capable of transforming acquired skills into sustainable livelihoods.
Kessavo called on the people of Lau and Taraba State to support the PDP, assuring that the party's programmes would prioritise good governance, youth inclusion, transparency and fairness.
He urged youths to familiarise themselves with what he described as the PDP's commitment to youth participation in governance, including a proposed 70 per cent youth inclusion, as well as equal opportunities irrespective of tribe, region, sex, religion or social status.
The House of Assembly hopeful strongly cautioned youths against allowing politicians to exploit them for violent political activities, warning that such actions could destroy their future while advancing the selfish interests of individuals.
He urged young people to reject political thuggery, violence and other forms of electoral malpractice, insisting that youths should demand accountability from politicians and participate in politics based on issues, competence and credible leadership.
According to him, youths have a direct stake in determining the future of Taraba and should therefore refuse to be used as instruments of destruction during political contests.
He further called on eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and ensure that they participate actively in the 2027 general elections.
Kessavo said the ballot remained one of the most powerful peaceful instruments available to citizens to influence the direction of government, urging Tarabans to exercise their franchise responsibly.
He appealed to youths to use their numerical strength positively by supporting leaders with credible programmes and holding elected representatives accountable to their promises.
The PDP candidate reiterated that a better Taraba could only emerge when young people move beyond being passive observers and become active participants in governance, economic development and community building.
