Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has rewarded students from the state who emerged champions at the 2026 International Debate Championship in Rwanda with a cash gift of ₦5 million each.
The Governor hosted the young champions to a dinner at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Jalingo, where he celebrated their outstanding performance and described the feat as a proud moment for Taraba and Nigeria.
Kefas said the students’ victory had brought honour to the state and demonstrated the capacity of Taraba youths to excel on the international stage.
As part of his administration’s Moving Forward Agenda and commitment to educational advancement, the cash rewards were presented on the Governor’s behalf by the Executive Chairperson of the Taraba State Universal Basic Education Board (TSUBEB), Hon. Christiana Binga.
The presentation, held at the TSUBEB headquarters in Jalingo, was witnessed by board members, directors and the UBEC State Coordinator.
The Governor said the gesture was designed to promote academic excellence and inspire other young people across the state to pursue distinction in their studies.
He added that the government would continue to support initiatives capable of exposing Taraba students to opportunities that would enhance their academic and intellectual development.
Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Heman Shawulu expressed appreciation to Governor Kefas for the financial and institutional support that enabled the students to participate in the international competition.
Shawulu also commended Hon. Binga for her encouragement throughout the process, saying the reward would significantly support their educational pursuits.
He urged students across the state to remain focused, embrace learning and strive for excellence, stressing that hard work, discipline and dedication remained critical to achieving success.
The students’ international victory, he noted, should serve as encouragement to other young Tarabans to believe in their abilities and pursue opportunities beyond the state.
The feat has further highlighted the potential of Taraba’s education sector and the importance of sustained investment in academic programmes that provide students with platforms to compete at national and international levels.
