The Taraba State House of Assembly has confirmed the appointment of a new Chairman and seven members of the Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC), completing the reconstitution of the electoral body ahead of future local government elections in the state.

The confirmation followed the screening of the nominees during Thursday's plenary at the Assembly Complex in Jalingo, presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Hamman Adama Abdullahi.

The nominees appeared before lawmakers one after another, presenting their credentials and responding to questions on their professional backgrounds, competence and preparedness to discharge the responsibilities of office.

Following the screening, the House unanimously approved the appointments.

Those confirmed are Joe Bala Aji as Chairman, alongside Joseph Buba, Usman Abubakar Sarki, Ahmadu Adamu, Abubakar Audu, Juliana Tafida and Yakubu Angyu as members of the commission. Zuwera Kishimi was also confirmed after being screened in absentia.

In a related development, the lawmakers confirmed Robert Andrew Narimiba as a member of the Taraba State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission to fill the vacancy created by the death of the former occupant of the position.

Addressing journalists shortly after the exercise, the newly confirmed TSIEC Chairman, Joe Bala Aji, pledged to build on the achievements of previous leadership of the commission by promoting transparency, professionalism and credibility in the conduct of elections.

He said the commission would prioritise an effective voter registration process and work within the provisions of the law to ensure that eligible residents of the state participate in the democratic process.

"We will bring our experience to bear in strengthening the commission and ensuring that every eligible voter has the opportunity to register and participate in elections," Aji said.

The Deputy Speaker subsequently directed the Clerk of the House, Salmuna Amos Sani, to communicate the Assembly's resolution to Governor Agbu Kefas for further necessary action.

The confirmation marks another constitutional responsibility discharged by the Assembly as part of its oversight role in strengthening democratic institutions and governance in Taraba State.
