The Taraba State Government has continued its 2026 School Tree Planting Campaign with the planting of trees at Nyamusala Nursery and Primary School in Jalingo, reinforcing its commitment to combating climate change, restoring degraded ecosystems and promoting environmental sustainability.
The exercise, organised by the Taraba State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, forms part of the state's afforestation programme aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, controlling erosion and improving biodiversity across communities.
The tree planting exercise was led by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Hajiya Aishat A. Barde, popularly known as Zinariyan Mumuyawa. Also present was the Chairman of the Taraba State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Hon. Tafarki Agbadu Eneme, who represented Governor Agbu Kefas, alongside officials of the ministry, the management, staff and pupils of the school.
Speaking during the event, the Principal of Nyamusala Nursery and Primary School commended the state government for selecting the school for the campaign. She also praised Governor Agbu Kefas for improving the learning environment in public schools through the provision of educational facilities and instructional materials.
Addressing the gathering, Hajiya Barde identified deforestation as one of the leading causes of environmental degradation, noting that the indiscriminate loss of trees has contributed to erosion, rising temperatures and other climate-related challenges.
She stressed that tree planting remains a practical solution to improving air quality, conserving biodiversity, protecting communities against wind erosion and restoring degraded landscapes.
The commissioner urged pupils to become champions of environmental conservation by planting trees in their homes and communities and ensuring they are nurtured to maturity.
She assured the school community that the ministry would carry out regular monitoring and follow-up visits to guarantee the survival and healthy growth of the newly planted seedlings.
The exercise, according to the ministry, underscores the Taraba State Government's resolve to expand afforestation efforts, mitigate the impacts of climate change and nurture a new generation of environmentally conscious citizens committed to building a greener, healthier and more climate-resilient Taraba State.
