The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers implicated in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, led to the death of Mene Ogidi. In a statement issued from Force Headquarters, Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer said the decision followed the conclusion of internal disciplinary proceedings.
Acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, all officers connected to the incident were withdrawn from the Delta State Command and redeployed to Abuja, where they underwent expedited review by the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC).
The committee found that the principal officer, Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and established rules governing the use of firearms. The FDC described his conduct as unlawful and unprofessional.
Based on its findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of Usman and other culpable officers. The Inspector-General has approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.
Police authorities said that upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over the extrajudicial killing.
Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward abuse of power and unlawful use of firearms, warning that any officer found culpable would face both disciplinary and legal consequences.
He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring that justice would be pursued to reinforce accountability and public confidence in the Force.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating their commitment to professionalism, protection of citizens’ rights, and internal accountability.
