The Taraba State Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has commenced a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) compliance assessment across its project sites to ensure adherence to safeguarding standards and protect vulnerable groups.
The assessment was led by the Gender and GBV Officer of the project, Mrs. Rahab Machoko, alongside a team from the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), under the guidance of the State Project Coordinator, Mr. Hananiah G. Albert.
The inspection focused on ongoing construction activities in various locations across the state, with emphasis on compliance with GBV prevention measures, workplace safety, and the protection of women, children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable community members.
Officials said the exercise was part of efforts to ensure all L-PRES interventions are implemented in safe, inclusive and abuse-free environments.
During the inspection, the team evaluated contractors’ compliance with established codes of conduct, particularly adherence to the project’s zero-tolerance policy on sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment.
The team stressed that full understanding and implementation of safeguarding principles remain a critical requirement for contractors participating in the project.
As part of the compliance checks, inspectors assessed site visibility and security measures aimed at reducing GBV risks, while also reviewing the adequacy of sanitation facilities provided at project locations.
Findings showed that attention was placed on ensuring restrooms met essential standards, including the provision of door handles, support rails, emergency alarm systems and reliable water supply.
The assessment also examined accessibility measures to ensure facilities accommodate persons with disabilities and respond to the needs of other vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children.
In addition, the team reviewed risk monitoring mechanisms designed to strengthen protection measures for affected populations and ensure prompt response to safeguarding concerns.
The inspection further covered workforce management procedures, with strict measures put in place to verify compliance by all personnel engaged in project implementation.
Officials described the exercise as part of broader efforts by the Taraba L-PRES project to mainstream safeguarding standards, promote accountability and ensure project activities align with best practices in gender protection and social inclusion.
