The (NUC) has released fresh guidelines regulating the award and use of honorary doctorate degrees in Nigerian universities, in a move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the nation’s university system.
In a circular dated February 24, 2026, and addressed to all Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities, the Commission said the new framework was developed in September 2025 and subsequently circulated in draft form to universities for input.
According to the Executive Secretary of the Commission, , the guidelines were formulated to standardise procedures for the conferment of honorary degrees and address growing concerns over the misuse and abuse of such awards.
The letter, referenced NUC/ES/138/VOL.66/74, explained that after receiving and incorporating feedback from some universities, the management of the Commission approved the final circulation of the guidelines for strict compliance.
The Commission stressed that the new measures are designed to protect the credibility of honorary doctorate awards and ensure that they are conferred only on deserving individuals who have made outstanding contributions to society, national development, or specific fields of endeavour.
The NUC urged Vice-Chancellors to ensure wide circulation of the guidelines within their respective institutions and to enforce strict adherence to the provisions.
Observers say the move signals the Commission’s renewed commitment to strengthening quality assurance and maintaining global standards within Nigeria’s higher education sector.
The circular was signed by Adewale Bakare, Acting Director, Executive Secretary’s Office, on behalf of the Executive Secretary.
