By Our Correspondent

Troops of the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army/Sector 3, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have intensified security operations against kidnappers and other criminal elements in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State, assuring commuters of improved safety on major roads across the state.

The military action followed a swift response by troops to gunshots heard on Thursday, January 29, 2026, along the Kasuwan Shanu–Jootar Road near a Nigeria Police checkpoint in Wukari. Upon arrival, the troops discovered a Sharon bus with Lagos registration number LSR 445 XT, conveying nine passengers.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Mr. Abdul Amukama, a 45-year-old man from Makurdi, was found with a gunshot wound to his right hand. Preliminary investigations revealed that two passengers had been forcibly abducted by suspected kidnappers and taken into the bush before the arrival of security operatives.

In response, troops of the 6 Brigade immediately launched aggressive search-and-rescue operations within the area to secure the release of the abducted victims. The Army said the operation is ongoing, with sustained pressure being mounted on the criminals.

The injured driver was promptly evacuated to the General Hospital in Wukari, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. The affected vehicle has since been recovered and is now in the custody of the security forces.

Commenting on the development, the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 OPWS, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, commended the troops for their prompt response and professionalism. He reaffirmed the Brigade’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, urging road users to continue their lawful activities without fear.

Brigadier General Uwa also called on residents to support ongoing operations by providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that such cooperation remains critical to restoring and sustaining peace in the area.

The operation, code-named Operation Peace Shield, forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to curb criminal activities and enhance security across Taraba State.
