Open Letter to His Excellency, Executive Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas

_From: Nigeria Association of the Blind, Taraba State Chapter_

Dear Sir,

We write to bring to your kind attention the plight of persons with disabilities, particularly persons with visual impairment (the blind). Despite submitting several letters of appeal and programme proposals to the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration, we have not received any response or approval from your office. We therefore humbly request your consideration and approval of funding for our programmes.

Every year, October 15th is observed as International White Cane Day for the Blind. This day highlights the significance of the white cane as a symbol of independence and empowerment for persons with visual impairment. It is also an opportunity for us to showcase our talents and celebrate our community. With your intervention and approval of funds, we are confident that this year’s celebration will be a resounding success. We would be deeply honoured if you could personally attend the event and witness the programme.

Throughout the year, we have repeatedly written to the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration seeking support for programmes that benefit persons with disabilities, especially the blind. Unfortunately, our letters have gone unanswered, and many of our initiatives have been stalled due to lack of funding. The ministry, which is tasked with addressing our needs, has often claimed that no funds are available. When we reached out to other ministries, they referred us back to the same ministry.

In addition, the casual staff employed in the government workshop for the blind have not been paid their salaries for almost eleven months. We appeal to you to kindly release funds to the ministry to enable the payment of these workers, as well as to support our needs and sponsor our programmes, including the forthcoming International White Cane Day.

Your Excellency, we are confident that under your benevolent leadership, our cries will not go unheard. We remain grateful for your responsiveness to the concerns of persons with disabilities whenever we have called upon you in the past. We believe that through this letter, you will once again extend your compassion and assistance to us.

We pray for God’s continued guidance, protection and blessings upon your administration. May He grant you wisdom, strength, and divine direction to make decisions that will benefit all citizens, especially persons with disabilities. We also pray for peace, prosperity and success in all your endeavours.

Thank you for your time and kind consideration of our appeal.

Sincerely,

Comrade Wanderimam Teyang
