Taraba State today joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Day, with a call for greater awareness on prevention and support for individuals living with spinal cord injuries.
Speaking in Jalingo, the Chairperson of the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Taraba State Chapter, Mary James Gaisa, who also serves as Special Assistant to the Governor on Agriculture and Food Security, said this year’s celebration is themed “Fall Prevention, Spinal Cord Protection.”
She noted that spinal cord injuries often have far-reaching effects on an individual’s physical, emotional, and social well-being. However, with the right resources and support, affected persons can live fulfilling and meaningful lives.
“The theme underscores the importance of prevention and protection. Falls remain a leading cause of spinal cord injuries, and by taking proactive steps, we can reduce risks and safeguard lives,” Gaisa stated.
She further outlined key strategies, including promoting fall prevention measures in homes, communities, and workplaces; educating families and caregivers on spinal cord injury management; and ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for persons with SCI.
Gaisa also called on stakeholders to provide more resources and services to enhance the quality of life for affected individuals while advocating for equal opportunities in all aspects of life.
“Together, we can create a more supportive and inclusive society for persons with spinal cord injuries,” she emphasized.
The International Spinal Cord Injury Day, celebrated annually on September 5, seeks to raise global awareness about SCI, promote prevention, and strengthen support systems for survivors.
