Adamawa Sanitation Committee Arrests Over 40 Offenders, Steps Up Environmental Awareness

By Atanga Philip,Yola – July 27, 2025

The Adamawa State Monthly Sanitation Committee has apprehended more than 40 individuals across various parts of the state for violating the monthly environmental sanitation order for July 2025.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Madam Syngana Dadah, disclosed this during a media briefing shortly after the sanitation exercise on Saturday.

According to Madam Dadah, the offenders were arrested for disregarding the government’s directive mandating the temporary closure of all business activities between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. every last Saturday of the month. She confirmed that all defaulters would face prosecution in accordance with the law.

The committee, which was joined by representatives from the state government, Federal Ministry of Environment, non-governmental organizations, security agencies, and members of the press, also used the opportunity to intensify public sensitization on the importance of environmental hygiene.

At Wuro-Kuturu along the Jimeta By-pass, enforcement officers clamped down on charcoal vendors who were found trading during the restricted hours, confiscating bags of charcoal. A similar crackdown was carried out at Kasuwan Gwari, where fruit and condiment sellers defied the sanitation directive.

“We recorded better compliance this month compared to the previous exercise,” Madam Dadah stated, commending the gradual improvement in public participation. She added that the ministry would continue leveraging the media to promote greater awareness and compliance in future exercises.

Areas covered during the sanitation operation included Luggere, Hospital Road, Nasarawo, Doubeli, Jimeta By-pass, and Wuro-Kuturu. The committee reiterated its call for residents to take collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for the overall wellbeing of the state.

Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
