DISASTER: People living in flood-prone areas in Taraba State are advised to relocate to safer zones.


The Honourable Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change Taraba state, Haj Aishat A.Barde made call in a press statement issued in Jalingo.

The statement reveals that in response to the ongoing flooding crisis in the state the Governor, Dr.Agbu Kefas had instructed the relevant authorities of the urgent need for comprehensive disaster management and climate adaptation strategies, the government's primary concern is the safety and well-being of its citizens.

It adds that Taraba State has assessed the affected communities, proffered solutions to some communities while work is still in progress on how to address the collapse bridges and other affected entities permanently.

The statement partly reads' 'As we reflect on this sad, unpalatable development, I call on Tarabans to be more proactive, and take all measures set by government seriously, for those living around flood prone areas, it is crucial to evaluate immediately, proper waste disposal, disiltation of our drainages and clearation of water ways are emphasized'.

The statement says history reminds us that Taraba State is part of the prey path of the Lagdo Dam of Cameroon, incidences of overflow of the said dam in the past had negative consequences on our well-being, properties and livelihoods of the citizens in our dear state.

It asks Tarabns to ensure that our environment is saved from the devastating effects of flooding and any subsequent climate change hazards. 

On the recent flooding occurrence across the country, especially Borno & Taraba states including recent news, photos, and videos of the devastating negative catastrophic effect of the Alau Dam flood in Borno State that occurred on the 10th September, 2024, where wake-up shocking waves to the entire Nigerians(Half of Maiduguri is under water including government entities, hospitals, schools, markets and the Emir's Palace describing it as unfortunate incident.

 Hon Aisha Barde was quoted saying "As human and Honourable Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change, I'm still battling to accept and recover from this destructive, ruinous reality. It is a validation to the actualization of the wrath of climate change which knows no boundary, race, political status, social status, age nor gender affiliation".


The statement identifies with all citizens impacted by this unfortunate incident and pray that the Maiduguri stakeholders come out of this stronger as well as those affected in Taraba State.
