No fewer than 19 persons were on Saturday arrested and prosecuted for violating environmental sanitation regulations during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.
The offenders were apprehended by security personnel deployed to various parts of the metropolis to monitor compliance with the state government's environmental sanitation directives and ensure residents participated in the exercise.
Speaking with journalists shortly after monitoring the exercise, the Chairman of the Taraba State Environmental Sanitation Agency (TSESA), Iliya Kefas Alhaji, said the arrests and subsequent prosecutions were necessary to enforce environmental laws and discourage acts capable of undermining efforts to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
According to him, the state government remains committed to enforcing sanitation regulations to promote environmental cleanliness, prevent disease outbreaks, and improve public health standards across the state.
"The arrests and prosecutions are intended to serve as a deterrent to individuals who choose to disregard environmental sanitation laws. We will continue to enforce these regulations to ensure compliance and safeguard the wellbeing of our communities," he said.
Alhaji expressed satisfaction with the overall conduct of residents during the exercise, noting that the level of compliance observed across the metropolis was encouraging and reflected increasing public awareness of the importance of environmental sanitation.
He attributed the growing participation in the monthly exercise to sustained public enlightenment campaigns and the government's commitment to creating a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
The TSESA chairman commended the agency's staff, security agencies, traditional leaders, community volunteers, and media organizations for their support in ensuring the success of the sanitation exercise.
He urged residents to make environmental cleanliness a daily habit rather than limiting it to the monthly exercise, stressing that proper waste disposal and regular sanitation practices are essential for sustainable development and the prevention of environmental hazards.
Alhaji reaffirmed that the end-of-month environmental sanitation exercise remains a critical component of the state's environmental management strategy and called on all residents to continue supporting the initiative in the interest of public health, environmental sustainability, and the overall development of Taraba State.
The monthly environmental sanitation exercise is part of ongoing efforts by the Taraba State Government to promote cleaner communities, reduce environmental pollution, and enhance the quality of life of citizens across the state.
