The Taraba State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Hajiya Aishat A. Barde, has directed contractors handling the Bobboji Storm Water Project in Jalingo to accelerate work and ensure timely completion of the project.
Barde gave the directive on Thursday during an inspection tour of the ongoing World Bank-supported project aimed at tackling flooding and erosion challenges in the Bobboji community and surrounding areas.
The commissioner conducted an extensive assessment of the construction site to evaluate the level of work completed and ascertain compliance with approved specifications and project timelines.
While commending the contractors for the progress made so far, she expressed concern over the pace of execution and stressed the need for intensified efforts to meet the project's completion deadline.
According to her, the Bobboji Storm Water Project is a critical intervention being implemented through collaboration between the World Bank and the Taraba State Government to provide a lasting solution to recurring flooding and environmental degradation in the area.
She noted that the timely delivery of the project is vital to protecting lives and property, strengthening environmental resilience and improving the living conditions of residents.
"The project is a strategic intervention designed to address the perennial flooding and erosion challenges that have affected the community for years. Its completion is essential for safeguarding lives, protecting property and enhancing environmental sustainability," she said.
The commissioner recalled that the project was flagged off by the Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, as one of the flagship climate-resilient infrastructure initiatives under the World Bank-supported Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Programme.
She said the project reflects the administration's commitment to restoring degraded environments, building climate resilience and improving the quality of life of citizens across the state.
Reaffirming the government's dedication to sustainable infrastructure development, Barde stated that Governor Kefas had given clear instructions that all ongoing projects must be completed and none abandoned.
"His Excellency has given clear instructions that no ongoing project should be abandoned. We are committed to delivering quality infrastructure that will stand the test of time and improve the lives of our people. The Bobboji Storm Water Project is one such intervention, and we expect every contractor to match the government's commitment with diligence and urgency," she stated.
During the visit, the commissioner also met with community youth leaders, who expressed appreciation to the state government for initiating the project. The youths pledged their continued support for the administration and promised to maintain peace and cooperate with contractors to ensure successful projects delivery.
The contractors assured that work would be intensified to meet agreed specifications and timelines, reinforcing the state's vision of building resilient communities through sustainable environmental and climate-smart infrastructure.
