A major milestone in disability inclusion was recorded in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State as ten tricycles were distributed to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and, for the first time, a PWD was appointed as Special Adviser to the local government chairman.
The initiative, described as a historic step towards inclusive governance, was spearheaded by the Executive Chairman of Wukari Local Government Council and approved by the Taraba State Government.
The tricycles were formally presented to beneficiaries by the Aku Uka of Wukari, His Royal Majesty, , during a ceremony attended by community leaders, government officials and members of the disability community.
Speaking on the development, the Southern Coordinator of the Taraba State Disability Commission, Hon. Mary James Gaisa, hailed the gesture as a landmark achievement that demonstrates genuine commitment to the welfare and inclusion of persons living with disabilities.
According to her, the provision of the tricycles will improve mobility, enhance economic activities and restore dignity to beneficiaries, while the appointment of a PWD as Special Adviser marks a significant breakthrough in political representation and participation.
“Today, Wukari has shown that inclusion goes beyond rhetoric. It is about taking concrete steps that empower people and give them a voice in decision-making,” she said.
She noted that many beneficiaries expressed gratitude, describing the intervention as life-changing. Some recipients said the tricycles would enable them to expand their businesses, move around more freely and support their families.
Hon. Gaisa commended the Executive Chairman of Wukari LGA for initiating the programme and for creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in governance.
She also appreciated the support of the Taraba State Governor, , for approving the project and for establishing structures aimed at protecting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.
The Disability Commission official further praised the Aku Uka for personally presenting the tricycles, describing the monarch’s gesture as a strong message against discrimination and social exclusion.
She called on other local government chairmen, traditional rulers, development partners and non-governmental organisations to emulate the Wukari example by implementing programmes that promote accessibility, empowerment and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Hon. Gaisa stressed that persons with disabilities possess diverse skills and talents and should be viewed as contributors to development rather than recipients of charity.
She urged stakeholders to support the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, noting that sustainable inclusion remains essential for social and economic progress.
The event is being widely regarded as a significant step toward strengthening disability inclusion in Taraba State and advancing the principle of equal participation in governance and community development.
