The Taraba State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment with the launch of the 2026 Skills Acquisition Programme, designed to equip young people with practical, income-generating skills.
The programme was officially inaugurated at Chyoby Catering School, Roadblock, Jalingo, where the Special Adviser to the Governor on Christian Religion Matters, Very Rev. Fr. Sunday Patrick Muke, welcomed participants and stakeholders. He described the initiative as a strategic step toward promoting self-reliance and sustainable development among youths in the state.
Speaking at the ceremony, Father Muke said the programme, themed “Empowering Taraba Youths,” reflects the government’s determination to tackle unemployment through vocational training and capacity building. He noted that the selection of participants demonstrates confidence in their potential to contribute meaningfully to society.
According to him, the training focuses on pastry and confectionery, with emphasis on baking techniques, production processes, and entrepreneurship development. He added that the initiative is structured to equip participants with the skills needed for job creation, economic empowerment, and poverty reduction.
“As we commence this journey, participants are expected to remain committed, disciplined, and eager to learn throughout the training period,” he said.
Muke further disclosed that the programme would extend beyond training, with successful participants to be supported with start-up materials to enable them establish their own businesses.
He expressed appreciation to the state governor for sustained support toward youth development, noting that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to expand economic opportunities across Taraba State. He also commended facilitators, organisers, and partners for their contributions.
In his remarks, a representative of Chyoby Catering School, Mr. Agbasainya, appreciated the state government for selecting the institution to train prospective entrepreneurs. He assured that the school would deliver quality training to equip participants with relevant skills in their areas of specialisation.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN), Taraba State Chapter, Dr. Sale Julius—represented by the Secretary, Mafiyoung Jingi—commended the initiative, describing it as a forward-looking effort to empower young people.
He expressed optimism that the training would produce entrepreneurs who would, in turn, create jobs and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
Some participants who spoke to reporters expressed gratitude to the organisers for the opportunity, pledging to make the most of the training and remain dedicated throughout the programme.
The two-week training programme is expected to contribute significantly to personal development and community growth, as participants acquire skills to become self-reliant and economically productive.
