The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned one Dr. Andefiki Markus before Justice H.H. Kereng of the Gombe State High Court over an alleged N20 million cattle investment fraud.
Markus was docked on Monday, May 5, 2026, on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence, filed by the Gombe Zonal Directorate of the EFCC.
According to the anti-graft agency, the defendant allegedly obtained the sum of N20 million from one Mr. Skeptra Useni Baka under the guise of investing the money in a cattle fattening business in Taraba State for profit.
One of the charges stated that Markus, on or about June 27, 2023, allegedly received the money through his Access Bank account number 0011125604 with intent to defraud, an act said to contravene Section 1(1)(c) and punishable under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act No. 14 of 2006.
When the charges were read before the court, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
Following the plea, prosecution counsel, Abubakar Aliyu, prayed the court to fix a date for trial and remand the defendant in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
However, defence counsel, C.C. Ichecu, informed the court that a formal motion for bail had already been filed on behalf of the defendant.
After listening to submissions from both counsels, Justice Kereng ordered that the defendant be remanded in EFCC custody and adjourned the matter to May 7, 2026, for hearing of the bail application.
