DEFECTION: NDC Debunks Claims on Chairman’s Availability, Clarifies Position on Prof. Yahaya’s Defection.
By our Correspondent, May 4,2026.
The Taraba State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed claims that its State Chairman, Ambassador Charles Tiuda, is unreachable, describing the assertion as misleading and inaccurate.
In a statement issued on Monday, the State Publicity Secretary, Mandela Adashoh Philibus, was responding to a social media post by Mr. Abdulmumin Imam, which alleged that the chairman’s phone had been switched off and that he could not be contacted.
Philibus maintained that contrary to the claim, Ambassador Tiuda has remained actively involved in party activities, particularly the ongoing congresses which commenced on May 1. He noted that despite a demanding schedule, the chairman has continued to engage stakeholders and receive party members from across the state at his office.
The statement also addressed reports surrounding the defection of Professor Sani Yahaya to the party, noting that while the NDC welcomes new entrants, due process must be followed.
According to the party, although it is pleased with the interest shown by Professor Yahaya and his supporters, there was no formal notification to enable the party to adequately prepare for his reception.
“Should the Professor wish to formalize his defection, he is well aware of the appropriate channels. It is unreasonable to expect the party to act without prior information,” the statement said.
Philibus added that the party leadership, under Ambassador Tiuda, remains open to engaging with all individuals committed to its growth and has already initiated communication with the professor regarding his interest.
He urged members of the public to disregard the claims made by Mr. Imam, insisting they do not reflect the true situation within the party.
Reaffirming the party’s commitment to inclusivity and democratic ideals, the NDC called on residents of Taraba State to join its ranks, emphasizing the need for collective action to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy amid ongoing governance challenges.
