The Taraba State Government has intensified efforts to improve environmental sanitation with the deployment of a new waste management system, supported by the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.
At a brief handover ceremony held on Thursday, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Hajiya Aishat A. Barde, representing Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas, presented waste skips and bins to the Ministry of Waste Management and Resource Innovation. The intervention is aimed at strengthening waste collection infrastructure and enhancing cleanliness across the state capital, Jalingo.
Speaking during the event, the Commissioner who holds the traditional title of Zinariyar Mumuyawa stressed the importance of strategic placement of the waste facilities.
She directed that the skips be located in high-traffic areas such as markets, motor parks, and densely populated residential communities to ensure accessibility and effective usage.
Barde, who is also referred to as the Greening Queen, underscored the need for a sustainable waste management culture. She called for regular evacuation of refuse, intensified public enlightenment campaigns on proper waste disposal, and active community participation to maintain a cleaner environment.
The Commissioner noted that environmental sanitation remains a critical component of public health and urban development, adding that improper waste disposal contributes to flooding, disease outbreaks, and environmental degradation.
Receiving the items, the Commissioner for Waste Management and Resource Innovation, Hon. Ambassador Shonzen James Bernard, expressed appreciation to the state government and ACReSAL for the intervention. He described the provision of the waste bins and skips as timely, noting that it would significantly improve waste collection efficiency and sanitation services in Jalingo.
Bernard assured that the ministry would ensure proper deployment and maintenance of the facilities, while also collaborating with stakeholders to promote responsible waste disposal practices among residents.
The ACReSAL project, a World Bank-supported initiative, focuses on building climate resilience and sustainable environmental practices in Northern Nigeria. Its intervention in Taraba is expected to not only enhance sanitation but also contribute to broader environmental sustainability goals.
The latest development forms part of Governor Kefas’ broader agenda to transform Taraba into a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable state, aligning with global best practices in waste management and climate adaptation.
