The Global Methodist Church in Nigeria (GMCN) has expressed strong dissatisfaction with a recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja over a suit challenging its change of name from United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN) to Global Methodist Church in Nigeria.
Addressing journalists in Jalingo, the Bishop of GMCN, John Pena, said the church disagrees with the court’s decision and has instructed its legal team to immediately file an appeal at the Court of Appeal, Abuja Judicial Division.
He disclosed that, in addition to the appeal, the church has also filed a motion on notice seeking an injunction pending the determination of the appeal, as well as a stay of execution of the judgment.
Bishop Pena maintained that the church remains within its constitutional and legal rights to continue its operations, including the use of its properties across the country.
He called on members to remain calm, prayerful, and steadfast, assuring them that all church activities, including worship services and programmes, would continue uninterrupted and in line with Christian teachings.
The cleric further urged members and supporters to be law-abiding and avoid any form of confrontation or actions capable of disrupting public peace or tarnishing the image of the church.
He reiterated the commitment of the church leadership to pursue all lawful avenues in seeking redress and justice over the matter.
