By Jako Keke, March 1, 2026.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Taraba State (COCSOTS) has applauded the Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, for the historic establishment of the Taraba State Persons with Disability Commission.

In a press statement issued in Taraba State, Nigeria, and signed by Bello Adamu Bako on behalf of the Chairman of the Coalition, the group described the constitution of the Commission as a landmark achievement that signals a new era of inclusivity, equality, and empowerment for persons with disabilities across the state.

The Coalition noted that the creation of the Commission underscores the state government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and socio-economic participation of persons with disabilities. It emphasized that the initiative would ensure equitable access to opportunities and essential services for one of the most vulnerable segments of society.

According to COCSOTS, the achievement reflects a collaborative effort between the Executive, Legislature, and Civil Society Organizations, demonstrating the power of sustained advocacy, constructive engagement, and shared commitment to positive change.

The group particularly commended Governor Kefas for his consistent inclusion of civil society actors in governance processes through appointments into committees, boards of parastatals, and advisory positions. It said the inclusive approach has strengthened transparency, enhanced citizen participation, and fostered collective ownership of development initiatives in the state.

Highlighting key aspects of the initiative, the Coalition pointed to the formal establishment of the Disability Commission, its strong focus on advocacy, accessibility, and empowerment, and its commitment to promoting equal opportunities in education, employment, and public services.

The statement further emphasized plans to advance accessible infrastructure and transportation by removing structural barriers and adapting public facilities to meet the needs of persons with disabilities.

COCSOTS expressed confidence that the Commission would serve as a strategic platform for driving sustainable change, restoring dignity, and expanding opportunities for persons with disabilities in Taraba State.

Describing the development as a proud moment for the state, the Coalition congratulated the government and people of Taraba State, noting that the establishment of the Commission marks a bold step toward building a more inclusive society.
