The atmosphere at Saint Monica’s Lutheran Church Cathedral, Jimeta, was one of deep reflection and renewed spiritual commitment as the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN), Yola Diocese, brought its convention to a close with a powerful call to action for Christians to live out their faith beyond the church walls.
Clad in colourful traditional attires and church uniforms, members drawn from different parishes across the diocese converged for the convention, which centered on moral rebirth, unity, and Christian responsibility in a rapidly changing society. The event climaxed with a sermon by the Bishop of the Diocese, Most Reverend Theophilus Shadrack, who challenged believers to rise above complacency and actively advance the gospel of Christ through their conduct and commitment.
Preaching from Matthew 8:13, Bishop Shadrack urged Christians to embrace steadfastness, resilience, humility, and total obedience to God, stressing that genuine faith must be reflected in daily living. He warned against pride and pomposity, describing them as subtle vices capable of eroding Christian values and weakening communal bonds.
According to the Bishop, love, empathy, and forbearance remain the hallmarks of true Christianity, especially in a society grappling with intolerance and moral decline. He expressed concern over the growing cases of domestic violence and social hostility, condemning such acts as inhumane and contrary to the teachings of Christ.
Bishop Shadrack also addressed family-related challenges, cautioning women who play surrogate or supportive roles in homes and communities to guard against bitterness, while charging men to cherish, respect, and protect their wives. He noted that stable families form the foundation of a healthy church and society.
Linking his message to the convention’s theme, “Hate What is Evil,” the Bishop warned that increasing heartlessness among individuals breeds evil tendencies capable of destroying peace and harmony. He therefore called on Christians to lead a collective campaign against evil by standing for truth, compassion, and righteousness in all spheres of life.
Beyond sermons and exhortations, the convention was marked by vibrant activities that strengthened fellowship among participants. These included gift presentations, offering competitions, a bazaar, and the celebration of Holy Communion, which underscored unity and shared faith among members.
As the convention came to an end, participants departed with a renewed sense of purpose, carrying with them a clear message: faith must translate into action, and Christians must consciously reject evil while promoting love, justice, and godliness in their homes and communities.
