SOCCER: Stephen Alfred Inspires Jalingo Youths with Novelty Match, Donates Boots

By Jako Keke, December 19, 2025.
Taraba-born international footballer, Stephen Alfred, has reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots sports development by donating football boots to youths in Jalingo during a novelty match staged in the state capital.

The thrilling encounter, tagged Team Stephen vs Team Jalingo, was played at the popular C2C Football Pitch and attracted a large crowd of football enthusiasts, sports stakeholders and members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Taraba State Chapter, among others.

At the end of the highly competitive fixture, Team Stephen edged Team Jalingo 4–3, drawing cheers from spectators who applauded the display of skill, passion and sportsmanship by both sides.
Speaking with journalists after the match, Stephen Alfred, who also organised the event, explained that the novelty game was aimed at reuniting former playmates and identifying young, talented footballers, while using the platform to promote unity and revive interest in football across Taraba State.

According to him, the donation of football boots to all participating players was part of his personal effort to encourage and support upcoming talents, stressing that many young players struggle due to lack of basic sporting equipment.

“I am motivated by my love for football and my desire to see young players succeed. This is my little way of giving back and inspiring the next generation of footballers in Taraba State,” Alfred said.

The international footballer further disclosed that he is exploring ways to collaborate with the Taraba State Government to rejuvenate football and other sporting activities in the state, which he noted have declined over the years.

“I am always trying my best to see how the government can get involved. Football in Taraba has been quiet for a while, and it will be a great thing if the government steps in to revive football and other sports in the state,” he added.

Commenting on the Super Eagles’ participation in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Alfred expressed strong support for the national team, stating confidence in the quality and experience of the players.

He wished the Super Eagles success in the tournament, noting that with the right commitment and teamwork, the squad has what it takes to make the nation proud.

The novelty match has been widely commended by sports lovers in Jalingo, who described the initiative as a timely boost to grassroots football development in Taraba State.

During the event, Stephen Alfred was presented with Taraba Football Builder awards by Team Jalingo.

Kurmi on the Brink: Why Silence Now Could Spell Disaster

By The Nigerian Newspointer Editorial Board In the quiet hills and lush forests of Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba State, an uneasy wind is blowing. Migration in itself is not new—men and women have always moved in search of safety, trade, and survival. But what is happening in Kurmi today bears markers that Nigeria has, sadly, seen before. And if urgent steps are not taken, the consequences could be dire. A Pattern Too Familiar From Plateau to Benue, from Southern Kaduna to Zamfara, Nigeria’s troubled history is littered with stories of migration that started innocently but later spiraled into violent conflicts. Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
