BUSINESS: Grain Buyers, Farmers Lament Heavy Losses as Produce Prices Crash in Taraba.

By Jako, December 15, 2025.

The Chairman of the Northeast Business Forum for Atiku, Taraba State Chapter, Danjuma Yusuf Lamu, has raised concerns over the severe losses currently faced by grain buyers and farmers across the state following a sudden slump in the prices of farm produce.

Yusuf, who also serves as the Executive Director of Jabbulawa Nigeria Limited—a company engaged in the purchase of grains and sesame seeds—spoke during an interview with our reporter.

He noted that the recent price slash announced by the Federal Government has continued to threaten the survival of their businesses and the livelihood of farmers.

According to him, the price of soybeans has witnessed an alarming drop. “Only last week, we bought a bag of soybeans for ₦49,000. Today, the same bag goes for ₦30,000. This is a huge loss for us,” he lamented.

Yusuf, who is also the Dan’Iyan of Kaigama Chiefdom, further disclosed that the price of maize has collapsed to ₦15,000 per bag at the Mayo Kam grain market, a situation he says has crippled the purchasing power of grain dealers.

He attributed the development to the ban on grain purchases especially maize by milling companies in Nigeria, coupled with the persistent increase in petrol prices, which has driven up operational costs.

“The farmers supplying these products are now selling at giveaway prices simply because they urgently need money to meet their family needs,” Yusuf said.

He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to intervene by addressing the plight of both farmers and traders, stressing that they play a significant role in boosting the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Yusuf emphasized that reducing petrol prices and subsidizing agricultural inputs remain the most effective strategies to cushion the economic hardship facing the sector and the country at large.

By The Nigerian Newspointer Editorial Board In the quiet hills and lush forests of Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba State, an uneasy wind is blowing. Migration in itself is not new—men and women have always moved in search of safety, trade, and survival. But what is happening in Kurmi today bears markers that Nigeria has, sadly, seen before. And if urgent steps are not taken, the consequences could be dire. A Pattern Too Familiar From Plateau to Benue, from Southern Kaduna to Zamfara, Nigeria’s troubled history is littered with stories of migration that started innocently but later spiraled into violent conflicts. Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
