BUDGET: Taraba Assembly Passes ₦653.6bn 2026 Budget, Moves to Establish Livestock Development Commission.

The Taraba State House of Assembly has passed the 2026 Appropriation Bill into law following its third reading during plenary.

The bill was passed after a motion moved by the Majority Leader, Hon. Jethro Yakubu Zikengyu, paving the way for the Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, to present the committee’s report on the floor of the House.

Presenting the report, the Committee Chairman, Hon. Abdullaziz Titong, disclosed that the budget size was increased from ₦650.631 billion to ₦653.631 billion. He explained that the upward review was to accommodate additional government projects aimed at accelerating development across the state.

Hon. Titong commended the administration of Governor Agbu Kefas for its vision and commitment to repositioning Taraba State for greater socio-economic growth. He added that the ₦3 billion increase in the budget would be financed through commercial borrowing.

Contributing to the debate, the member representing Donga Constituency, Hon. Dinkomiya Nulamunga, and his Takum I counterpart, Hon. Tanko Abubakar Yusuf, expressed support for the report. They commended the committee for its thorough work and urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to rise to their responsibilities in the implementation of the budget for the benefit of the people.

Following deliberations, the House unanimously adopted the report, clearing the way for the passage of the Appropriation Bill into law.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. John Bonzena Kizito, thanked members for their cooperation and commitment toward the timely passage of the budget. He subsequently directed the Clerk of the House, Salmuna Amos Sani, to prepare a clean copy of the bill for onward transmission to the Governor for assent.

Meanwhile, the bill seeking to establish the Taraba State Livestock Development Commission, 2026, has scaled through second reading.

The bill was presented by the Majority Leader, Hon. Jethro Yakubu Zikengyu, who explained its general principles during plenary. Members representing Nguroje, Karim II, Takum I and Kurmi constituencies—Hon. Nelson Lens, Hon. Anas Shaibu, Hon. Tanko Yusuf Abubakar and Hon. Dr. Tafarki Agbadu Eneme—spoke in favour of the bill, highlighting its importance to the state and the nation’s agricultural sector.

The House, through a voice vote, approved the bill for second reading. The Speaker thereafter referred it to the Committee on Agriculture with a directive to conduct a public hearing and report back to the House for further legislative action.
