Former Governor of Taraba State, Reverend Dr. Jolly Nyame, has expressed concern over what he described as growing disrespect from some individuals he mentored and supported during his years of public service.
Nyame, the first civilian governor of the state, spoke in Jalingo while reflecting on activities marking his 70th birthday anniversary. He thanked God for the grace to attain the milestone, describing it as a platinum jubilee worthy of gratitude.
The former governor said that during his tenure, he contributed significantly to the growth of many individuals, raising them “from scratch” to prominent positions in society. He, however, lamented that some of those he nurtured no longer accord him the respect he expected.
“At seventy, one of the most painful experiences of my life is the open disrespect to my person by people I helped to build,” Nyame said. “There are many who cannot deny that they are products of my mentoring and support. Yet, today, some of them are openly opposing and fighting me.”
Nyame noted that as a father figure, he felt compelled to speak out, stressing that his comments were not driven by bitterness but by a desire to address what he sees as a moral decline. He also called for unity among the people of Taraba State, warning that divisions along the three senatorial zones were unhealthy for the state’s progress.
The former governor commended Governor Agbu Kefas for sustaining some of his legacies, including the renovation of Government Houses, the Palliative Market, and the Danbaba Suntai Airport. However, he expressed concern over the condition of the Taraba State Specialist Hospital and the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo, urging the government to give them due attention.
Speaking on his political ambition, Nyame declared his readiness to contest the Taraba North Senatorial seat, saying his experience qualifies him for effective representation at the National Assembly.
“The Senate is not a place for novices; it is a place for elders with experience,” he said, adding that his long years in leadership have earned him the trust of the people.
On the defection of Governor Kefas from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nyame disclosed that he supported the move, describing it as a strategic decision to align the state with the Federal Government for greater development.
“I encouraged the governor to align with the Federal Government because development flows better when there is synergy,” he said. “Being part of the ruling party at the centre will help Taraba attract more projects and opportunities.”
Nyame reiterated his commitment to the unity, peace, and development of Taraba State.
