World News Day: The Significance of News in SocietyBy Kamalu Aliyu Babando, Senior Lecturer, Taraba State Polytechnic, Suntai-Jalingo Campus.

As the world joins hands to commemorate World News Day, it is important to reflect on the indispensable role of news in shaping societies, strengthening democracy, and safeguarding truth.

News is more than just headlines; it is the lifeline of informed decision-making. In every corner of the world, it connects communities, gives voice to the voiceless, and holds those in authority accountable. Without credible news, misinformation would thrive, leaving citizens vulnerable to manipulation and ignorance.

The significance of news lies in its power to educate, enlighten, and empower. For the farmer in a rural village, access to news provides vital updates on weather, markets, and government policies. For students, it broadens horizons beyond the classroom, helping them understand the realities of the world. For leaders, it serves as both a mirror and a check, reminding them of their responsibilities to the people.

In Nigeria, the role of news has been especially crucial in uniting a diverse nation and amplifying issues of governance, security, education, and development. Journalists remain at the forefront, often at great personal risk, to ensure that the public is well-informed.

On this World News Day, we are reminded that supporting responsible journalism is not optional but essential. Citizens must demand accuracy and fairness, while journalists must uphold the ethics of truth, balance, and integrity. In doing so, news will continue to serve as a pillar of democracy and a light against darkness.

As technology reshapes how information is shared, society must remain vigilant against fake news and disinformation. The challenge for both journalists and consumers is to preserve the sanctity of news as a tool for progress, peace, and justice.

World News Day is not just a celebration of journalism but a call to action — to value, protect, and promote the truth.

Kurmi on the Brink: Why Silence Now Could Spell Disaster

By The Nigerian Newspointer Editorial Board In the quiet hills and lush forests of Kurmi Local Government Area of Taraba State, an uneasy wind is blowing. Reports of an unusual influx of Fulani and Hausa migrants fleeing violence in Northern Nigeria have unsettled the peace of this agrarian enclave. Migration in itself is not new—men and women have always moved in search of safety, trade, and survival. But what is happening in Kurmi today bears markers that Nigeria has, sadly, seen before. And if urgent steps are not taken, the consequences could be dire. A Pattern Too Familiar From Plateau to Benue, from Southern Kaduna to Zamfara, Nigeria’s troubled history is littered with stories of migration that started innocently but later spiraled into violent conflicts. Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
