Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that the nation has “turned the corner” and is now on a path of recovery, declaring that the sacrifices made under his reform policies are beginning to yield results.
In a national broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the President said the economic pains of the past two years were necessary steps to rescue the country from collapse and reset it on a trajectory of sustainable growth.
“The worst is over. Yesterday’s pains are giving way to relief,” Tinubu declared, commending citizens for their resilience and patience in enduring tough reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of foreign exchange rates.
Highlighting key gains under his administration, Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s economy recorded its fastest growth in four years, with GDP expanding by 4.23% in the second quarter of 2025, while inflation fell to 20.12%, the lowest in three years. He further revealed that external reserves now stand at $42.03 billion, the highest since 2019, while non-oil exports have risen significantly, signalling economic diversification.
The President also announced that federal, state, and local governments now have “more resources to take care of the people,” attributing this to prudent fiscal reforms. “We ended the corrupt fuel subsidies and multiple foreign exchange rates that benefitted a few while leaving the majority in poverty,” he said.
On security, Tinubu praised the Armed Forces and security agencies for their sacrifices in restoring peace to troubled regions, including the North East and North West, and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to stamping out terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping.
Speaking directly to Nigerian youths, the President described them as “the future and the greatest assets of this blessed country,” citing interventions such as the student loan scheme (NELFUND), affordable credit facilities, and the soon-to-be-implemented iDICE programme for digital and creative enterprises.
While acknowledging the rising cost of living, Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, stressing that the reforms will translate into better living conditions. “The true measure of our success will not only be in economic statistics but in the food on our families’ tables, the electricity in our homes, and the security in our communities,” he said.
Calling for collective responsibility, the President urged citizens to embrace productivity, innovation, and patronage of local products, declaring: “Let us be a nation of producers, not just consumers. I say, Nigeria first.”
Tinubu ended his broadcast with a message of optimism: “With Almighty God on our side, I can assure you that the dawn of a new, prosperous, self-reliant Nigeria is here. Happy 65th Independence Anniversary.
