The Police Service Commission (PSC) has expressed deep shock over the death of its former Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Parry Osayande, who passed away early Sunday in Benin, Edo State.
Osayande’s death comes barely a month after the passing of another former PSC Chairman, Solomon Arase, compounding the Commission’s grief.
DIG Osayande, described as an erudite and consummate police officer, succeeded Chief Simon Okeke, the pioneer chairman of the Commission.
He was appointed by then-President Goodluck Jonathan in April 2008 and served as chairman during a period the PSC credited with “rapid growth.”
His tenure, according to the Commission, secured a Presidential approval for the construction of a befitting corporate headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, a legacy that still stands today.
In a statement on Sunday, PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), described Osayande as “fearless, focused, and commanding,” noting that his leadership gave the Commission significant mileage during its formative years.
Argungu said the latest loss was a heavy blow to the Commission, urging Nigerians to keep the PSC in their prayers during what he described as a difficult season.
“The death of DIG Osayande is a great loss for the Commission. Losing two of our former Chairmen within one month is indeed a trying moment,” Argungu said.
The late DIG Osayande is remembered as a reform-minded officer who paid his dues to the Nigeria Police Force and left an indelible mark on the PSC.
