By Hon. Kamalu Aliyu Babando, Senior Lecturer, Taraba State Polytechnic, Suntai – Jalingo Campus
Taraba State has clocked 34 years since its creation on August 27, 1991, a milestone that offers an opportunity to reflect on the state’s progress and challenges. Over the years, Taraba has made notable strides in education, security, human development, agriculture, and infrastructure, placing it on the path of steady growth.

Education;
The state has expanded access to education with more schools across its 16 local government areas and the establishment of higher institutions including Taraba State University, College of Education Zing, and Taraba State Polytechnic. Investments in e-learning, teacher training, and improved school facilities have further demonstrated government’s commitment to raising a generation of well-equipped leaders.

Security;
While insecurity remains a national challenge, Taraba has worked to strengthen community safety through local vigilance groups, stronger collaboration with security agencies, and peace-building initiatives among diverse communities. These measures have helped in sustaining relative peace across the state.

Human Development;
Human capital development has been a focal point, with targeted programs on youth and women empowerment, healthcare, and vocational training. The state has also introduced entrepreneurship support schemes that are reducing unemployment and expanding opportunities for self-reliance. Rural clinics and general hospitals are receiving attention, improving access to healthcare for many families.

Agriculture;
Known as “Nature’s Gift to the Nation,” Taraba has maintained its agricultural relevance with large-scale production of rice, maize, yam, tea, and sesame. Mechanized farming, extension services, and support for smallholder farmers have boosted yields. Agro-processing and market linkages are opening new opportunities for farmers and encouraging value addition.

Infrastructure;
Infrastructure has been another area of significant growth. Road and bridge projects have improved connectivity, while rural electrification and water supply schemes are enhancing the quality of life. Urban renewal efforts in Jalingo and other towns are modernizing the state’s outlook and attracting investment.

At 34, Taraba reflects a story of resilience, unity, and consistent progress. With abundant natural resources and a determined populace, the state is positioning itself for greater transformation in the years ahead.

A Pattern Too Familiar From Plateau to Benue, from Southern Kaduna to Zamfara, Nigeria’s troubled history is littered with stories of migration that started innocently but later spiraled into violent conflicts. Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
