Heavy flooding has destroyed several farmlands and crops across Lau and Karim Lamido Local Government Areas of Taraba State, leaving many farmers counting their losses.
Findings by our correspondent revealed that the floods, triggered by recent heavy downpours within the state and neighboring regions, have washed away crops such as maize, rice, millet, and sorghum, among others.
Riverine communities including Kwata Langa, Kanawa, Bwoi Baba, Santana, parts of Bandawa, Shomo Tapoi, Sanga, Nibolo Madaka, and Garin Tonga are reported to be under imminent threat as water levels continue to rise.
Confirming the situation, the Desk Officer of Karim Lamido Local Government Council, Yusuf Hamza, said the disaster has placed many farmers in dire conditions. He disclosed that over 40 hectares of farmland, worth millions of naira, have already been destroyed.
Hamza further stated that seven wards—Karim “A”, Karim “B”, Jen Kaigama, Muri “A”, Muri “B”, Jen Ardido, and Bikwin—have been affected, with several communities grappling with the impact in the face of a struggling economy.
He appealed to well-meaning individuals, non-governmental organizations, and humanitarian agencies to come to the aid of the victims.
On the Council’s response, Hamza explained that Karim Lamido Local Government, in partnership with the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA), has embarked on sensitization campaigns to keep residents alert to possible further flooding.
Efforts to reach the Desk Officer of Lau Local Government for comments were unsuccessful as his contact was not reachable at the time of filing this report.
