COMMISSION:Army Officer Testifies on Ambush by Suspected Herders in Karim Lamido, Calls for Dialogue.

By Jako, July 28, 2025.

Captain John Datol of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army Headquarters in Jalingo has testified before the Peace and Justice Commission of Inquiry investigating the recent crisis in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, revealing that his unit was ambushed by suspected Fulani herders in the area on May 12, 2025.

According to Captain Datol, during the ambush, a piece of military equipment was seized by the attackers. However, he disclosed that the item was later recovered in the Wurboyi community, along with five motorcycles believed to have been used by the assailants.

He further explained that in the process of recovering the stolen equipment, one of the attackers who opened fire on his troops was neutralized. A den gun and a locally fabricated pistol were retrieved from the deceased suspect.

During cross-examination, Captain Datol identified Munga Lelau as the community most affected by the crisis. He stressed that the resort to self-help and vigilantism by residents only escalated tensions and resulted in avoidable loss of lives and property.

He emphasized that the path to sustainable peace in Karim Lamido lies in dialogue and reconciliation, urging all parties involved in the conflict to lay down their arms in the interest of peace and communal coexistence.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Silas Haruna, assured that the inquiry would be thorough and impartial. “No stone will be left unturned in uncovering the root causes of the crisis,” he said, adding that justice will be served to all parties involved.

The commission continues to receive testimonies from affected communities and security operatives as it works to understand the underlying issues fueling unrest in Karim Lamido and other crisis-prone areas in Taraba State.

Farmers and herders once lived in uneasy but manageable coexistence until land sales, unchecked settlements, and political silence turned simple disputes into ethnic conflagrations. The echoes of those past crises are now knock...
