Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has reiterated his strong commitment to true federalism and enhancing the Middle Belt’s role in national governance.
He made this statement during a condolence visit by the Middle Belt Elders Forum, who came to honor the late Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Useni (retd.).
Mutfwang who welcomed the delegation led by retired Major General Zamani Lekwat, expressed his gratitude for their support following the death of General Useni.
He described the passing of the retired military leader as a monumental loss to Plateau State, the Middle Belt, and the entire nation.
The Governor also took the opportunity to recognize the contributions of other key national figures such as Sir Edwin Clark, leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), and Pa Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, praising their efforts towards national unity and development.
Speaking on regional issues, Governor Mutfwang reflected on the historical injustices faced by leaders from the Middle Belt, and urged Middle Belt stakeholders to overcome internal divisions and rivalry, which he believes have hindered the region’s progress.
The Governor emphasized the need for decentralization in governance, especially in areas like cultural administration and revealed that Middle Belt governors are in discussions to strengthen the region’s position for better representation and influence in the national landscape.
The Governor's remarks continue to highlight the Middle Belt’s strong push for a more inclusive and decentralized governance structure that reflects the diverse interests of all regions in Nigeria.
Leader of the Middle Belt Elders Forum, retired Major General Zamani Lekwat praised General Useni’s exceptional service to the country in the military, the Senate, and as a community leader.
General Lekwat who also stressed the importance of recognizing the Middle Belt’s vital role as a bridge between the North and South of Nigeria reiterated the need for restructuring to ensure that all regions of the country are equally represented and have the opportunity to contribute effectively to national development.
