GBV: UN Women, WOWICAN Taraba State Chapter takes the Sensitization on Gender Based Violence,GBV to Kurmi LGA.




People of Kurmi Local government area has been asked to support the course of ending Gender Based Violence GBV in the area.
The Chairperson Women Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria, WOWICAN Taraba State Chapter Deaconess Mercy Sambo made the call during a sensitization program for traditional and religious leaders on the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls in Nigeria at the Council Hall in Baissa.
The Chairperson said the WOWICAN in collaboration with the United Nations UN Women deemed it fit to organise the sensitization as Kurmi in recent statistics was ranked second in GBV.
Mercy Sambo explained that the recent statistics are a negation to the Taraba State hence the need for sensitization to chat out ways of addressing the ugly trend.
Speaking to the Chairman of Kurmi Local Government Council Moses Maihankali expressed worry about the ranking of Kurmi Local Government area as second in the perpetuation of GBV and reiterated his commitment to change the narrative for the good.
Moses Maihankali while appreciating the UN Women and the WOWICAN for organizing the sensitization said the Council will ensure that Kurmi is cleared of the ugly trend.
In his presentation, the Executive Director of Safe Environment And Community Health Initiative, Nashuka Fidelis said social norms play a significant role in perpetuating Gender Based Violence GBV.
He enumerated the types of Gender Based Violence GBV to include; Physical violence, Emotional violence, Cultural violence, Digital violence,
Neglect, Sexual violence and 
Economic violence.
Nashuka Fidelis who doubled as the President National  Council of Non-Governmental Organizations NGOs and the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations CSOs in Taraba State sued for a collaborative effort to end GBV in the society.
The Resource person mentioned the Impact of Social Norms on perpetuating Gender Based Violence GBV to include
Justification of violence, Cultural acceptance of domestic violence, Social stigma, Economic dependence, Limited economic opportunities for women, Financial independence, Silencing victims and limited support system.
In his goodwill message, the District Head of Baissa represented by Bala Hassan said all hands must be on deck to put an end to Gender Based Violence, stressing that people should repohaveany form of violation of rights to the appropriate authority for prompt action.

INSECURITY:Bissaula Community Leader Raises Alarm Over Renewed Attack, Calls for Lasting Security Deployment.
